While it used to be easy to tell if you were hearing a recording, these new robot callers dynamically react to your actions on the phone, and they pull from an unknown number of canned responses, much like the Terminator’s perspective of scanning for appropriate lines.
The information age has been upon us since shortly after Terminator 2. In the “real” world, those movies were our warning, and now we have companies funding interactive robots that trick humans on the telephone in order to obtain information. The implications for this can get pretty bad, as what is depicted in the movies is just the tip of the iceberg… Where do we categorize this phenomenon relative to “social media”?
