FaceBook has suppressed “conservative” news items – Why are we not surprised?!?
It’s par for the course, but FaceBook is also about promoting the lowest common denominator.
Not only does FaceBook censor and punish posts that are not “PC”, and not only does it encourage its users to report non-“PC” postings for this censorship and punishment, but encourages a herd mentality while preventing this divergent “conservative” thought. The most popular items that do not breach the “PC” line tend to be shared, while any posted thoughts that may offend anyone can lead to major social repercussions for the poster. It is essentially “Social Stalinism”.
And true to form, former employees at FaceBook claim that the “news” items promoted by FaceBook for the past couple of years were routinely biased against what would be vaguely considered “conservative” perspectives or stories.
One may ask if it is advisable to get one’s news stories from a social media site like FaceBook, and that is clearly a valid question to consider, but one should also consider that this is basically the same set of concerns that have governed most TV news and Newspapers items for decades, if not centuries: Promoting what sells consistently while pushing a perspective. It has simply been updated to be more high-tech, with more immediate effects.
The site exists for several reasons: To spy on the masses that volunteer personal information, to develop lists of this information to sell, to sell advertisements, to push agendas, and to train the masses to accept and expect everything described above.
FaceBook is a major player in the social media and online content markets, and while it may be exploited for social reach, it remains an enemy of genuine communications and media ethics.
